Trotting races in Menorca

escanear0004

Trotting races have been an extremely popular sport in the Balearic Islands for over two hundred years.

These horse-and-cart races are held in Mahon and Ciudadela hippodromes at summer weekends. It is different to normal horse racing in that the riders have to keep the horses at trotting speed and not allow the animals to break into a gallop.

The jokeys are dressed in silk and ride Roman style chariots around sandy circuits.

It is great fun to watch and even more exciting if you have placed a bet on a horse and it comes in first.
